GRAP ( Gurugram Residents Against Pollution)

GRAP – A Citizens Movement : From a New Year’s Fast to a Citywide Fight Against Pollution

Gurugram Residents Against Pollution (GRAP) is a citizen-led movement born out of urgency, conscience, and quiet courage. It began on 31st December 2025, a night when the world was welcoming the New Year with celebrations and fireworks, while Gurugram was choking on dust and toxic air.

As the city rejoiced, Gauri Sarin chose to fast—not in protest for attention, but as a moral appeal for the right to breathe clean air. Sitting on the ground, she was soon joined by committed volunteers who stood with her in solidarity, choosing action over apathy and responsibility over silence.

The fast became a turning point. Authorities reached out, and what followed was not symbolic engagement, but on-ground work. Gauri Sarin undertook an extensive city-wide tour of Gurugram, with the MCG Officials walking, observing, documenting—seeing the city as its residents experience it every day. Volunteerrs from across the city worked relentlessly to get data. This effort led to the identification of 50 major dust accumulation hotspots—unpaved stretches, broken footpaths, construction debris, and neglected public spaces that silently poison the air. A detailed list of these locations, along with clear, actionable recommendations, was formally submitted to the authorities, urging time-bound and visible corrective action.

GRAP stands for the belief that clean air is a basic right, not a seasonal promise. It is a reminder that when systems fail, citizens must step forward—and that real change often begins when a few choose to stay awake while the rest of the city celebrates.
